Review
Terry Borer, Lawrence Mak and Barry Tanenbaum have coauthored Limit Hold'em: Winning Short-Handed Strategies to help players improve their short-handed Limit Hold'em game.
It's immediately evident that this is a book by professional players, for professional players, not one aimed at the beginner market. Its 366 pages are without illustrations except for a few diagrams.
Limit Hold'em: Winning Short-Handed Strategies begins with several introductory chapters that give an overview of topics such as online versus brick-and-mortar games, short-handed and full-ring games and "player-modeling" statistics and software.
After this preliminary section comes the meat of the subject: learning betting strategies and developing a successful short-handed and super-short-handed Limit Hold'em game. Betting strategies for every street of the game are laid out, as well as etiquette for players, handling tilt, personal development and more.
Twenty-one chapters go into considerable depth on these and many other topics, with each chapter divided into several subsections. In addition, 245 quiz questions and examples throughout the book help the reader get a handle on numerous potential real-life scenarios.
Borer et al. have created an excellent resource and an indispensable guide to improving short-handed Limit Hold'em play. Their book is very well written. The skilled Limit Hold'em player will find herself going back to it for reference on a repeated basis.
Speaking of skill, this book is aimed at experienced Limit Hold'em players; it's a tough read for newcomers to the game.
The back cover promises to help you "dominate and control your table," and while the book may be an intensive read, it's easy to see how it could deliver just that result.
