Letter to Applicants for Media Credentials

Las Vegas, May 9, 2006

Dear Media Member:

Thank you for your interest in the World Series of Poker. We look forward to another successful tournament schedule in 2006, when we expect to exceed the record 20,000 participants from 45 countries and nearly $103 million in prize money awarded at last year's World Series of Poker.

In 2005, we processed more than 1,000 applications for media credentials and granted more than 600 of those requests. We are implementing new guidelines for 2006 because:

  1. Requests for media credentials are accelerating as rapidly as the number of entrants and prize money, resulting in a need to impose some limitations;
  2. Contracts with official media outlets for the World Series of Poker require changes to prior practices.

The new guidelines are available as a PDF for you to download [at the World Series of Poker homepage].

While these terms are in some cases more restrictive than those used in the past, they are similar to those used in the NFL, NBA, NASCAR and other major sports and entertainment events, each of which has exclusive television, radio and online agreements with various media. For example, the leagues grant accredited journalists varying degrees of access, based upon contracts with media affiliates; we will be doing the same.

Our goal is to provide the best possible service not only to the official television, online and print media outlets for the World Series of Poker, but to all journalists granted credentials. We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to working with you.
