Ladbrokes takes top spot in U.K. online poker
Ladbrokes Poker reported this week that it clinched the No. 1 position in the U.K. poker industry on Hitwise after hitting a record number of visits to the site in the week ending June 14.
The increase in hits resulted in Ladbrokes getting a 19.5% of the market share for the week, boosting the poker site to the top of the U.K. poker market.
According to Ladbrokes Poker, the results coincide with the launch of its new look. The company revamped its site to attract new players and retain the interest of its established poker players.
Ladbrokes Poker is the only site to offer a choice of three ways to access its poker rooms. Players can choose a 3-D version with customized avatars, gestures and an interactive poker school, the classic version or an instant play option in their Web browser.
"There has been a solid poker playing community at Ladbrokes for six years," stated Ladbrokes Poker pro and World Heads-Up Champion Jeff "JaffaCake" Kimber.
"The new website illustrates just how much the site has developed in such a short period of time. People often only think of Ladbrokes as the great high street bookmaker - but I'm proud to be a part of their poker business."
Another boost to the site's activity last week was the site reaching its billionth hand being dealt. Ladbrokes Poker celebrated the milestone by giving away more than $300,000 in World Series of Poker prizes in one giant freeroll.
According to Ladbrokes Poker, players were scrambling to be in the action when the billionth hand hit in order to qualify for a spot in the freeroll.
The freeroll wasn't the only place at Ladbrokes Poker that players could get a WSOP seat. The poker site reported a final flurry of qualification for WSOP Main Event seats in June as it wrapped up its satellites for the event.
Ladbrokes Poker will be sending more than 100 qualifiers to the Main Event with $14,000 prize packages that include the $10,000 buy-in plus money for travel and accommodations.
Ed Ihre, Ladbrokes Poker managing director, said that the poker site is putting in the foundations to create even faster growth on the site. It has devised a marketing plan to make that happen and also started its biggest-ever player recruitment drive in other key European markets outside the United Kingdom.
The poker site will take another step forward in development next week too. Ladbrokes Poker plans to launch a more modern look and feel to its classic poker software, which includes improved ability to multi-table and the ability to choose local currency.
