Kuzmin Captures WPT Southern Championship

2011 WPT Southern Poker Championship winner Alexander Kuzmin.

Russian Alexander Kuzmin helped spoil Allen Carter's shot at a second World Poker Tour Southern Poker Championship title, capturing the crown himself in Biloxi, Mississippi Friday.

From Moscow, Russia, the two-time 2010 World Series of Poker final tablist bested a final table that included Carter, WSOP bracelet winner Ryan Huges and Aussie Millions second runner-up Shannon Shorr to earn $601,469 and put an end to Carters bid to become the first player to win the same WPT event twice.

Kuzmin came in with the lead, but Carter dominated the table and appeared poised to make it happen before losing his grip on the title three-handed.

Kuzmin then took a 2:1 chip lead into heads up and made quick work of $500 satellite winner Leif Force.

“Alex played terrifically,” said WPT commentator Mike Sexton. “He came in as chip leader, lost a lot of chips and went into lockdown mode. He was able to change gears and played superbly once we got down to three-handed poker. He deserved to win.”

The WPT Southern Poker Championship drew 214 players to the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino creating a a $1,986,100 prize pool.

Here's how things finished up at the final table:

1 Alexander Kuzmin $601,469

2 Leif Force $315,790

3 Allen Carter $218,471

4 Shannon Shorr $144,985

5 Patrick Mahoney $113,208
