Washington Post photographer Melina Mara was in the right place at the right time.
Senior Republican Senator John McCain was caught on camera yesterday playing online poker during the Senate hearing on whether the US will attack Syria.
Washington Post photographer Melina Mara snapped this photo of McCain passing the time playing a few hands of poker on his smart phone.
The Senator addressed the blunder directly on Twitter and CNN.
He made no apologies about tuning out the testimony of Obama administration officials to instead play a game on his cell phone, having reportedly already heard the testimony the day before in a closed-door meeting with the President.
"Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!" he tweeted.
And then shortly later in an interview on CNN:
“As much as I like to always listen in rapt attention constantly to remarks of my colleagues over a three-and-a-half-hour period, occasionally I get a little bored.”
The Senator also joked that the worst part was how he had lost thousands of dollars during the poker session. He quickly clarified it was just play-money.
