J.C. Tran WPT player of the year

An amazing spell on the World Poker Tour (WPT) in the beginning of 2007 earned J.C. Tran the title "WPT Player of the Year" in season 5. The Vietnamese-born poker pro joins the likes of Howard Lederer and Daniel Negreanu, who have won the title in previous seasons.

J.C. Tran was absolutely on fire in early 2007. He finished sixth in the Gold Strike World Poker Open in January and second in the L.A. Poker Classic in February, before winning the World Poker Challenge in March.

Three World Poker Tour final table finishes in three months is an amazing accomplishment, and J.C. Tran was both happy and relieved after his victory at the World Poker Challenge in Reno.

"Man, it's a great feeling. It feels a lot better than finishing second in L.A. even though that paid a lot more money. But winning a WPT title was one of my goals coming into poker, and accomplishing that is a big step for me in becoming a force in the poker world," Tran said in a post-tournament interview with PokerListings.com

Before the WPT Championship at the Bellagio started, Tran had a comfortable lead at the top of the Player of the Year race, and when the only two threats, Joe Pelton and Daniel Negreanu were knocked out early in the event, the deal was sealed.

Tran himself didn't make any money in the WPT Championship, but instead he won one of the finest awards the poker world has to offer.

Winners of the WPT Player of the Year title:

Season 1 - Howard Lederer
Season 2 - Erick Lindgren
Season 3 - Daniel Negreanu
Season 4 - Gavin Smith
Season 5 - J.C. Tran
