Review

From A-B-C to Zombie, The Poker Encyclopedia is a must-have book for the poker novice who needs a quick reference to the poker lingo, slang and some of the game's more prominent figures.

The reference book was first started by Elkan Allan, a journalist and TV producer who played and wrote about poker. He died not long after starting the project and his work was picked up and finished by young croupier and writer Hannah Mackay.

Mackay acknowledges in the foreword of the encyclopedia that because of the Internet, there isn't as much need for a comprehensive, fact-only reference for the poker world. Unlike the Encyclopedia Brittanica, which sticks strictly to the facts, The Poker Encyclopedia strays into offering up poker advice and opinions while educating readers on the facts as well.

For instance, a novice player may look up an unfamiliar term like "The Marriage" and find a simple explanation: Slang for Q-K as your hole cards in Hold'em.

Or he could look up a Doyle Brunson - the hand, not the man - and find out it's the T-2 starting hand because Doyle Brunson won two World Series of Poker Main Event championships with that hand, and also find the advice that just because Texas Dolly won with it doesn't mean it's always going to be a lucky hand for someone.

While it's not the kind of book a person is going to enjoy reading cover-to-cover, there are plenty of surprise nuggets of strategy information, fun quotes and more that readers will find as they look up different terms in the book.

From its green felt exterior to the information it contains, this guide will be a fun book to add to your collection.
