Internet gambling initiative endorsed by RGA
The Remote Gambling Association announced today it is endorsing the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative, which is working to promote legalizing and regulating online gambling in the United States.
The SSIGI was created by two U.K.-based companies in May 2007 to help push forward Rep. Barney Frank's legislation to license and regulate online gambling in the United States rather than ban it.
The organization is trying to raise awareness about regulating online gambling that will better protect consumers and ensure the integrity of financial transactions at the online gambling sites.
The RGA represents some of the largest global remote gambling companies and expressed its support of the SSIGI.
"RGA endorses the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative in its mission to support regulated Internet gambling and protect consumers betting online," said Clive Hawkswood, RGA chief executive.
"Internet gambling is capable of control in order to prevent it from being used as a source of crime," he continued. "Only through a regulatory framework as championed by the Initiative will the proper protections be in place to guard against money laundering, fraud and identity theft."
Jeffrey Sandman, SSIGI spokesman, expressed the organizations gratitude for the RGA's support as well as encouraged others to show their support.
"RGA's endorsement is a significant indication of the importance of mobilizing support for regulated Internet gambling, and we are delighted they are joining our effort," he said.
"We encourage supporters to visit www.safeandsecureig.org to urge members of Congress to cosponsor legislation to regulate Internet gambling, thereby protecting consumers and capturing billions in revenue that is needed for critical government programs."
The RGA has been doing its part in congress by providing testimony to the House Committee on Financial Services that a regulatory framework for Internet gambling would protect consumers and provide integrity to Internet gambling financial transactions.
The organization said existing systems and technology have proven successful in combating underage and compulsive gambling and protecting Internet gambling transactions.
According to the SSIGI Web site, other endorsers include eCOGRA, GamCare and the European Gaming and Betting Association.
