Review

In the Money brings the reader into the world of one of the shooting stars of poker, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari. The book was written by Antonio and features contributions by other poker superstars, such as Phil Hellmuth and Phil Laak.

The first thing the reader realizes is that the full title of the book, In the Money, Strategies for Winning Texas Hold'em Cash Games, is a little misleading: The book comes across more like an autobiography than an instructional poker book. With that said, it is a very easy and entertaining read that mixes advice and strategy with anecdotes from the lives of "the Magician" and other top players.

Antonio has managed to put together a charming and entertaining first book. Players looking for numbers, odds, and cold hard fact would be better served elsewhere, but if what you want is a light, engaging read sprinkled with tips and tricks you will certainly enjoy In the Money.

The book consists of fourteen main chapters.

  1. My Introduction to Poker
  2. Poker Magic
  3. Getting Started
  4. No-Limit versus Limit Games
  5. Cash Games versus Tournament Play
  6. Pre-flop Strategy
  7. Post-flop Strategy
  8. Playing the Turn
  9. The River
  10. Shorthanded Strategy
  11. Heads-Up Play
  12. Table Image
  13. The Texture of the Game
  14. Playing Online

In addition to the main chapters, In the Money includes shorter chapters such as Chip Tricks, How to Speak like the Pros, and Suggested Reading, to name a few.

The book totals 181 pages including foreword and index.
