Mike Carlson bested a field of 400 players to win the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Grand Casino Mille Lacs event in Onamia, Minn., Oct. 22. He won $43,600 for his efforts.

On his way to victory, the Shakopee, Minn., resident even beat out Mike Simon, a Laport, Minn., player who had won the World Poker Tour Season 4 World Poker Challenge in Reno earlier this year.

The tour was created and designed to give players around the country a chance to make the big time. There have been events in Wisconsin, California, Minnesota and Michigan with upcoming events in Indiana and South Dakota.

The HPT has given out more than $2 million in prize money so far this year. Play has already started in the main event of the HPT Majestic Star Casinos and Hotel event in Gary, Ind. The final table plays today.

Poker players have one last chance to be a part of the HPT this year and win some money. The last event on the 2006 tour will be in Flandreau, S.D., at the Royal River Casino Nov. 22-26.
