The holidays are a time for giving, and what better way is there for poker players to open up their wallets and give than through some of the many charity poker tournaments and other poker events coming up both live and online.

We've rounded up a small selection of charity events being offered at casinos and in online poker rooms that benefit a few different charities.

Poker seminar benefits Adopt-A-Rescue-Pet

If you're eager to improve on your poker skills and to help out a good cause, you may want to head to the Palace Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday.

David Sklansky, along with other poker pros, will be on hand in the Traxx Lounge starting at 2 p.m. to host a poker seminar to raise money for the Adopt-A-Rescue-Pet nonprofit volunteer organization.

ARP takes in used and abandoned animals and gives them medical attention and a safe place to live until a new home can be found.

The ARP is one of southern Nevada's most active animal rescue organizations. Over the past two years, more than 4,000 dogs have been rescued and adopted through ARP, and the number of needy pets helped in 2008 is estimated to reach 2,500.

If you'd like to help, the poker seminar costs $150 (charge by phone at 702-635-6703) and will include guest speakers such as Barry Tanenbaum, Lee Markholt, Mark Gregorich, Roy "The Oracle" Winston, Vanessa Rousso and Mark Newhouse.

It will also include complimentary drinks and prizes.

On Saturday, Casino Arizona will once again host its annual Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Christmas Toy Drive No-Limit Hold'em Tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. in the Poker Room at the Casino Arizona 101 & Indian Bend and will play until they've got a winner. The buy-in for the event is a new, unwrapped toy worth $10 or more for the children of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
