Heartland Poker Tour dealing in Deadwood

Deadwood, one of the historic spots from the Wild West gambling days, is returning to its poker roots with the Heartland Poker Tour this week at the Lucky Nugget Card Club. The events begin Wednesday with satellites and the main event will start Sunday.

With low buy-ins for satellites, qualifiers, and the main event as well as a chance to get on TV, the Heartland Poker Tour draws in quite a few local and regional poker buffs wherever it goes.

Events have taken place in a wide variety of locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, South Dakota, Michigan, Indiana and others. Some events have brought in so many players that the prize pools have been in the hundreds of thousands.

Lucky Nugget owner Matthew Ramsey told the Rapid City Journal in South Dakota, "This is the first big, televised tour in Deadwood, and we're pretty excited about hosting it."

The Heartland Poker Tour is broadcast to more than 50 million people and gives local poker players their shot at 15 minutes of fame.

Deadwood isn't the only city in South Dakota to play host to the Heartland Poker Tour. The Royal River Casino in Flandreau also hosted the tour in November.

Lance Wiles, the Lucky Nugget general manager, happened to win that event to take home nearly $50,000. He's just one example of how the tour promotes poker among the local poker players, not just the pros.

"I think it's important to stress that a local boy has won one of these, and that's what it's all about," Ramsey said.

The Lucky Nugget is hoping to see between 500 and 600 entries in the tournament. That amount would put the prize pool near $175,000 like the Flandreau event.

The tournament schedule is as follows:

  • Wednesday: One-seat satellites start 10 a.m., $35 buy-in
  • Wednesday: Two-seat satellites start 10 a.m., $70 buy-in
  • Thursday: One-seat satellites start 10 a.m., $35 buy-in
  • Thursday: Two-seat satellites start at 10 a.m., $70 buy-in
(satellite winners gain entry into qualifier rounds)
  • Friday: Qualifiers start 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., $330 buy-in

  • Sunday: Main event televised final table approximately 3 p.m.

All those wishing to participate must register at the Lucky Nugget Card Club in Deadwood by 30 minutes before the beginning of the event.

The Heartland Poker Tour program airs Sundays at 11 p.m. The Deadwood event isn't scheduled to air until the next season begins filming.
