“I’ve put a lot of time and effort into poker and I’m looking for validation.”

Olympic gold medal boxer Audley Harrison is no stranger to the WSOP, but now thanks to experience in both cash games and tournaments he’s confident he can hold his own against anyone at the poker table.

Unlike many celebrities and sports stars who enter events at the WSOP, Harrison has paid his dues and watched his experience and results develop since first playing here in 2007.

With over $220,000 in live tournament earnings and a ton of cash game experience in games as high as $25/$50, Harrison is expecting results this summer.

“This is strictly business for me,” Harrison told on a break from the $1,500 Six-Max No-Limit Hold’em event he was playing in.

“I’m here to take down a bracelet,” he emphasized.

Speaking with Harrison about poker it’s easy to tell he takes the game seriously, and has put in the time to improve as a player.

“There’s so much to this game that I didn’t have a clue about when I started, whereas now I feel like I understand the nuances of the game, and I can hold my own with the best players in these events,” he said.

“I’ve put a lot of time and effort into poker and I’m looking for validation.”

Like many pro athletes turned poker players Harrison sees similarities between high-level sports and poker.

“People see boxing as all crash, bang whallop but it’s called the sweet science for a reason and there’s a real science to poker as well,” he told us.

At 6’5” and 250lbs Harrison is an imposing presence, but according to him that doesn’t count for much on the felt.

“I show down the right hands and I know when to make moves and that’s how you get people’s respect at the poker table,” he said.

“How you look is irrelevant.” he said.

Harrison hails from Britain but now lives in Las Vegas and California.
