Give the Devil his due: Devilfish wins Euro Finals
Noted English player David "Devilfish" Ulliott outlasted a world-class field of 115 players this past Sunday to win the Diamond Championship €5,000 main event at the Euro Finals of Poker at the Aviation Club de Paris, France.
Ulliott received €151,000 (roughly $186,382 USD) for his victory, as well as a diamond bracelet.
"What a great start to the year," said Ulliott after the event. "I was originally going to the Aussie Millions but changed my mind and I'm damned glad I did. I'm off to Deauville now to make it a hat-trick."
The Devilfish entered the final table, which included Paul Testud and Theo Jorgensen, as the chip leader and put in an impressive performance. He eventually made it to heads-up play against French player Roger Hairabedian, whom he was able to dispatch in the final hand with 7-7 versus 5-5.
Ulliott is one of the more colorful players in poker, renowned for wearing his trademark gold knuckle-duster rings. He is one of the few players to have won both a WSOP bracelet and a WPT title.
The Diamond Championship victory is the second win for Ulliott in 2009. He also dominated a side event at the Irish Poker Championship for a €33,000 victory in the first week of January.
Ulliott's last major victory came back in 2007 when he took down a $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the Gold Strike World Open in Tunica for $109,192.
