Foxwoods Resort Casino has announced it will be expanding its poker room to nearly twice the existing size as part of a $700 million project that will span the course of the next 3 years.
The new non-smoking poker room will be 40% larger than today's venue and will boast a total of 114 tables, up from the 76 currently in use. It will be designed to accommodate more players and to lessen sign-up lines for games. Tables will feature state-of-the-art poker technology including LED table components, automatic card shufflers, and an electronic seat monitoring system that will speed up player turnover rate. In addition, a 100-plus seat restaurant will be constructed adjacent to the poker room.
The new poker room is slated to open in spring 2006. Foxwoods representatives have admitted that the idea has been floating around for some time as a result of the recent poker explosion in the United States. On an average weekend, table capacity at Foxwoods reaches about 100%, while on weekdays it is estimated at closer to 85%, a total of around 2,000 players.
Foxwoods, which has just begun its annual World Poker Tour event, the World Poker Finals, is by far the largest and most successful of all the Eastern United States gambling venues. It has been a frequent stop on the World Poker Tour (WPT) televised circuit in recent years, and hosts several other televised poker tournaments and small weekly events every year.
