Review
Sam Farha is regarded as one of the greatest cash-game Omaha players in the world. You'll be unable to forget this fact as his book seems to serve up equal parts Omaha insight and outright bragging. Every example he gives spins off into a story of him exuding excellence.
Although he has done some pretty spectacular things in the world of four-card poker, it's hard to tell how much of his bragger is based in truth. That aside, the book can be reviewed in two separate categories.
Firstly, the overall writing in this book is less than inspiring. The reading aptitude level of the reader needs to be no more than that of a sixth grader, apart from the poker-specific terms. But the reason for reading this book has little to do with the search for artistic genius, and a lot to do with learning to play Omaha.
In the world of Omaha, Farha really does know what he's talking about. The book covers Limit Omaha Hi, Pot-Limit Omaha Hi and Omaha Hi-Lo. Each variation includes the subsections:
- Basic Strategy
- Before the Flop
- On the Flop
- Beyond the Flop
Omaha Hi-Lo and Pot Limit Omaha also include:
- Tournament Strategy
while Pot-Limit Omaha alone has the subsection:
- Heads-Up and the Art of the Deal
The advice in the book is truly useful and valuable. In fact, it would be surprising to find any pros who play Omaha at the higher limits in Vegas who haven't thumbed through this book, as much for advice as for a look into the mind of one of their favorite opponents.
Although Farha is a hyperaggressive action player, he does a great job in explaining why and how he plays his style, and how to best play as a beginner. The method to his madness is impressive, well-thought-out and typically executed with extreme skill and precision.
The lack of inventiveness in the actual writing almost serves as a benefit for already-serious players looking to skim the book. The elementary text lends itself to easy skimming and speed-reading. The book can be read quickly, without the need to invest your full concentration in the task.
For players brand-new to Omaha, this text is a perfect place to start your Omaha career, while old hands will grab a useful tidbit of knowledge from each section. Regardless of your skill or proclivity for the game, Farha's Farha on Omaha is worth the price of entry.
