EPT Copenhagen heats up

Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier continues her grind toward an EPT title in Copenhagen.

The two Day 1 flights at PokerStars' EPT Copenhagen are through and it appears 184 players will start Day 2 in Denmark Thursday.

Scandinavian poker legend Thor Hansen managed to top all comers on Day 1a Tuesday, building on a flush-over-flush miracle that left him with a $74,700 stack.

But the godfather of Norwegian poker, and the rest of the field, will be looking up at one of the hottest players on the European Poker Tour this season when things get going from Casino Copenhagen around 2 p.m. local time tomorrow.

Two-time EPT Season 5 finalist Andrea Benelli dominated Day 1b, including making a runner-runner flush to suck out and grab the chip lead from Dane Theo Jorgensen.

As a result, the Italian will head into the event's second day with over $100,000 in chips and the overall lead.

Danes like EPT Budapest finalist Albert Iverson and Rasmus Nielsen, who made fourth in this event last year, ended Day 1a close to the top, and Day 1b big stacks included Alexander Petersen, Tore Lagerborg and Roberto Romanello.

All eyes on Day 1b in the Danish capital were on a starting table that included Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Annette Obrestad, Jesper Hougaard and Team Full Tilt pro Gus Hansen.

However, Obrestad was the only one from that group to book a seat for Day 2, joining Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier and Danny Ryan, who made the final table here last year.

Jorgensen joined Hansen on the rail, leaving them both time to train for their boxing match/prop bet later this week, and 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate also said goodbye on Day 1b.

Among the notable players who survived Day 1a were 2005 EPT Copenhagen winner Noah Boeken and the Rookie of the Year at the 2007 PokerStars Scandinavian Poker Awards, Norway's Trond Eidsvig.

PokerListings' live coverage continues from Copenhagen through Day 2 until a champion is crowned Feb. 21.
