German Dietrich Fast put on a dominating performance to open the 2016 edition of EPT Malta with a big €174k victory in the €10k Single-Entry Rebuy event.

Fast finished as the chip leader on both Day 1 and Day 2 of the tournament before finally running into a bit of trouble at the final table but eventually emerging victorious.

Italian Dario Sammartino took a huge portion of Fast’s chips during four-handed play but the German eventually regained the lead thanks to a lucky double-up with pocket fives over pocket sevens.

Buddiga Cracks $5m in Earnings

As expected the €10k Rebuy event was largely dominated by professional players.

Pratyush Buddiga

There were a total of 60 entries (with 48 unique) players and noted pros Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Davidi Kitai and Pratyush Buddiga were among the final table contestants.

Troyanovskiy (eighth) and Kitai (sixth) fell out of contention early. Buddiga, a former Scripps Spelling Bee champ, made it a bit farther before finally losing a race with pocket sevens.

Buddiga picked up €61,690 for finishing fourth, which was actually just enough to give him $5m in lifetime live tournament earnings. Buddiga hasn’t been playing that long as his first cash was in 2010.

Summartino ended up finishing in third place, which led to an unlikely confrontation between Fast and unheralded Russian Viacheslav Buldygin.

Buldygin actually staged a short comeback against Fast but in the end the German lived up to a Tweet he posted before play started today:
