Day 9: Two, two and two

By Sean Lind

Today at the World Series, we will see two bracelets won, two fields work down to a final table and two new events start.

Event 7

Before we get into today's events, though: Last night two more bracelets were won. The first was taken by Matt Keikoan for winning Event 7. The $2,000 NL Hold'em event brought out 1,592 players for a prize pool of just under $2.9 million.

Keikoan's aw-shucks attitude belies some fearsome poker skills.

When questioned by PokerListings about his heads-up battle with online baller Shannon Shorr, Keikoan replied, "Wow, I'm still trying to figure out what happened. It went kind of smoothly for me actually. I just kind of built up. I did catch some cards - I've been catching cards this entire tournament - so I got lucky in that respect. I guess that's how you win tournaments."

When the dust had settled, things looked as follows:

Place Player Chip Count
1 Matt Keikoan $550,601
2 Shannon Shorr $349,141
3 Carter Gill $228,897
4 Theo Tran $191,231
5 Mihai Manole $155,013
6 Chris Bjorin $123,141
7 J.C. Tran $94,166
8 Alex Bolotin $72,436
9 Michael Lisanti $50,705

Event 8

The $10,000 Mixed World Championships was a star-studded affair, with a relatively unknown player named Tony Rivera taking the bracelet for first place after only one hand of heads-up play.

Place Player Chip Count

2 James Mackey $297,792
3 Matthew Glantz $184,992

6 Sam Farha $85,728

8 Jeff Madsen $54,144
9 David Oppenheim $45,120

Event 9

The $1,500 No-Limit Six-Handed event is down to its final table today. It's a battle of unknowns, as not a single player of the final six has had a major live tournament win. Coincidentally, the two players with the most tournament winnings both share the last name Porter.

Here's the final-table layout:

Place Player Chip Count
1 John Conkright $1,100,000
2 Michiel Brummelhuis $740,000
3 Ralph "Rep" Porter $660,000
4 Nathan Templeton $535,000
5 Anatoly Shilyuk $350,000
6 Devin Porter $275,000

Play begins at 2 p.m. PDT. Be sure to keep an eye on our live updates section for the action as it happens.

Event 10

The $2,500 buy in Omaha/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo event attracted 388 players to amass a prize pool of $892,400. The effective chips stacks are close in size, promising an exciting final-table dynamic.

Place Player Chip Count
1 Farzad Rouhani 500,000
2 Greg Pappas 304,000
3 John Cernuto 285,000
4 Tom Chambers 235,000

6 John Racener 181,000
7 Daniel Mowczan 122,000
8 Yueqi "Rich" Zhu 87,000

Event 11

Day 2 of the $5,000 NL Hold'em Shootout begins today. With 36 players remaining from the original 360, they will play down to a final table of six by the end of the day today. Some of the big-name players still in the field are Erik Seidel, Greg Mueller, Tony G, John Juanda and Joe Sebok.

One of the players not to make it to Day 2 was Phil Helmuth, who after a day of supertight play got his chips all-in with Ks Kc against Juanda's Ac Ad.

Carlos Mortensen, Gavin Smith, Phil Laak, Bill Chen and Evelyn Ng all put up a good fight, especially Smith and Ng, who both made it to heads-up, but none of these well-known pros were able to make it to Day 2.

Action starts at 12 p.m. PDT. Find out all the updates on our Live Updates page.

Event 12

Day 2 of the $1,500 Limit Hold'em tourney gets under way at 3 p.m. PDT. Coming off his first WSOP bracelet win, Erick Lindgren is making a run at another final table with $23,000 chips, enough to put him in seventh place out of the 181 players left.

Other notable players still in the running are Victor Ramdin and Dewey Tomko, as well as Marcel Luske in fourth.

Event 13 and Event 14

Event 13, $2,500 buy-in NL Hold'em, will be sure to attract a large field. With many of the top players still in other tournaments, and the $10,000 World Championship Seven-Card Stud tournament starting the same day, it should open up the door for a few more unknown players to take a stab at a final table.
