As befits a player nicknamed 'Devilfish,' David Ulliott gives himself away as being exceedingly competitive with this quote: 'I'd swim across shark-infested waters with a pork chop hanging around my neck in order to play the best poker players in the world.'
Few doubt that David Ulliott is himself one of the world's best poker players. Precocious, he got his start in the game during his school days, playing cards with friends on flat tombstones in a cemetery. He noticed he had a knack for winning and began playing at home against his parents. However, his father became furious over David's frequent victories and that was the end of that. He went on to discourage everybody he played against from ever playing against him again.
Devilfish has a distinctive appearance, dandyish in his dress, including orange tinted prescription glasses, a slicked-back coif and huge rings on his fingers. He says that his nickname resulted from a game he played in October, 1996. An opponent said 'You're a devilfish.' David inquired as to what a devilfish was and learned that it is a poisonous fish that becomes lethal when not cooked properly.
When Devilfish went to the Four Queens Tournament in Las Vegas in 1996, he wound up playing heads-up against Men 'the Master' Nguyen. Headlines the next morning announced 'Devilfish devours the Master.' David Ulliott had his gold bracelet from that occasion engraved with his nickname 'Devilfish' and the name has been with him ever since, including on one occasion on a beach in Aruba when three women in bikinis yelled 'Devilfish' at him from down the sands and then flashed him, dropping their tops. He says that such is the price to pay for stardom.
Indeed, Devilfish has achieved such recognition from his television appearances that his fans readily spot him wherever he goes. Not only is he considered one of the very fiercest of all No-Limit Hold'em players in the world but, also, experts are prone to saying such things as: 'If the game is Pot-Limit Omaha, you can just hand him the title at the beginning.'
