Daily 3-Bet: Urbanovich Tops GPI, Poker Up 10%, ElkY Twitches
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is all about puppies, sunshine and rainbows in the normally bleak mid-afternoon poker news world.
You can always make suggestions for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.
In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Dzmitry Urbanovich getting some accolades for his dominant EPT Malta, live poker tournaments getting a significant boost and a must-watch Twitch.tv account.
1) Dzmitry Urbanovich Snags Top Spot on GPI POY
He doesn’t have the easiest name to spell but people are starting to remember Dzmitry Urbanovich anyways.
The unheralded Polish pro came out of nowhere to absolutely dominate EPT Malta with a total of four (!) outright wins and six cashes in total.
It’s not like they were all small events either with a win in the €25k High Roller for €572,300 and another in the €5k turbo event for €110,000.
He won over $800,000 in March.
It was enough to power Urbanovich to the top Global Poker Index’s POY race with a total of 2,438 points.
Connor Drinan, who Urbanovich beat heads-up in the EPT High Roller event, is currently in second place with 2,165.
2) Report: Live Poker Tournaments Up 10%
There’s always been a fair amount of doom and gloom in the poker industry since hitting record numbers in 2006 but that doesn’t mean every aspect of poker is on the downturn.
Poker Industry Pro has a new article (subscription only) that claims live tournament entries increased by nearly 10% using data collected from the GPI.
It’s a significant increase that shows interest in poker is still very high.
In particular we’d point out the incredible success of low buy-in tournaments such as the WPT500, WSOP Millionaire Maker and even our own Battle of Malta.
Low buy-in tournaments show there are still plenty of recreational players who don’t mind taking a shot at the right price.
We expect that number to grow even more this summer when the WSOP launches the potentially record-breaking $500 buy-in Colossus event.
3) ElkY Ramps Up Streaming for PokerStars.FR SCOOP
Want to watch one of the best tournament players in the world play PokerStars.fr's SCOOP in real time with hole cards showing and commentary for free?
Time to turn on Twitch.tv and select Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier’s stream.
Grospellier has been playing and streaming a ton of SCOOP events (that’s the French edition) and while it is a little hard to understand the fast-speaking former Starcraft pro, the insight he provides while he plays is fascinating.
ElkY has already scheduled his next streaming day for April 4 so mark your calendar if you want to see some high-level play.
Also Jason Somerville is being featured on the front page of Twitch.tv today if you can't wait for Grospellier.
We live in a strange time where coaching that used to cost hundreds of dollars an hour is basically available for free on Twitch any time you want it.
