Daily 3-Bet: Swede v Swede, EPL Gambool, Big Hellmuth Pineapples
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a crown of flowers, a gleeful skip around the maypole and round-after-round of eye-blurring afternoon poker news nubbe.
Have something you'd like to see in a future 3-Bet? Drop us a note in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find some Swede-on-Swede violence in the GPL, English Premier Leaguers struggling with punting and Phil Hellmuth scores big pineapples.
1) Round 3, Fight!
If you caught yesterday's scintillating heads-up matches in the Global Poker League you're no doubt already all over Twitch today.
If you missed yesterday's action, well ... let's just say it's worth going back to watch the ElkY v. Jungleman match at least.
If you just want to get right to the new stuff you don't have long to wait as Olivier Busquet of the LA Sunset is alrwady taking on Darren Elias of the Sao Paulo Metropolitans.
That sweet matchup will be followed up by a very intriguing national showdown between Swedes Martin Jacobson and Anton Wigg, representing the Montreal Nationals and San Francisco Rush respectively.
We know the poker will be good; let's hope they get into a surströmming eating challenge, too.
The nightcap match is stone-cold WPT crusher Anthony Zinno of the Las Vegas Moneymakers vs. Tom Marchese of the New York Rounders.
Grab the popcorn and settle in; this GPL thing is getting good fast and you don't want to miss a minute. It's the most fun we've had watching poker in a long time.
2) Premier Leaguer: "I Liked to Bet on the Bus"
It's common knowledge that a ton of footballers like a good gambool and play a lot of poker on the bus between matches.
Teddy Sheringham, Gerard Pique and Tomas Brolin are a few who've taken it to a semi-pro level after their careers were over; Danny Mills and Andy Cole a couple of amateurs who've been enticed into the fold recently.
Apparently, though, the love of the gambool - and the consequences of losing a few buy-ins - is taking its toll on a few Premier Leaguers.
According to some new research posted on The Telegraph today "Premier League players are underperforming on the pitch because of worries arising from poker games on the team coach or at hotels before matches."
The research was done by Graeme Law of the University of Chester and was sourced from 34 current and former professional footballers.
Top footballers are also "using online betting sites to conceal their gambling" and because of the strife of losing "were unable to function to the level expected, and this leads to resentment in the team about their gambling."
Sound likes a pretty solid case for integrating proper bankroll management into the team handbooks. Law will present his findings at the British Sociological Association’s annual conference today.
3) Hellmuth Wins a Whole Lot of Pineapples
If you've ever watched Phil Hellmuth's live Twitch stream you know you can expect a few, err, surprises from time to time which may include full frontal nudity and his own or someone else's phone #s/email addresses.
It's a spectacularly Hellmuthian train wreck, really, but always filled with edge-of-your-seat suspense.
Another thing you'll also know? Phil really loves to play some Open-Face Chinese Poker on the #playpineapple app. And all those hours of punting off buy-ins finally paid off for him yesterday as he won the first-ever 25k OFC High Roller.
We're 99% sure those are literally just pineapple tokens and not real-money, but still. Congratulations are in order, we guess?
