The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a family operation that continues to bake three fluffy nuggets of mid-afternoon poker news every day.
You can always make your own suggestion for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.
In today’s 3-Bet we’ll take a look at a poker-playing U.K. family, a break in the Paul Phua sports betting case and Phil Hellmuth getting "smashed" at the poker table by an NBA star.
1) Judge Recommends Tossing Phua Betting Case
This summer Paul Phua and a number of the famous “Macau businessmen” were arrested at Caesars in Las Vegas because they were allegedly running a high-stakes sports betting ring taking.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal it turns out the case may be thrown out because the FBI’s search warrant was “fatally flawed” and lacked probable cause.
Phua and his son Darren are both currently free on bail that was posted by Phil Ivey.
Prosecutors previously argued that Phua and his group made $13 million in profit over the summer accepting bets on the World Cup.
“This is a triumph for citizens everywhere, showing that courts will enforce the constitution,” said Phua’s attorney David Chesnoff, who also represents numerous high-profile poker players.
2) U.K. Family Turns Poker into Family Business
Those who play together stay together.
The dailymail.co.uk published a story this week about the Sheil family who quit their day jobs to play poker for a living full time.
The family includes Michelle and Matthew Sheils as well as their sons Richard and Brandon.
Last week 19-year-old Brandon placed third in UKIPT London side event for £9,200. Prior to that Richard outright won a £300 deepstack at Dusk till Dawn for £26,000.
Parents Matthew and Michelle have a collection of their own wins and each member of the family, on average, plays three tournaments a week.
Matthew, a former accountant, says the family relies on a math-based game to keep winning.
Meanwhile Richard did his dissertation on poker and the science and math behind the game.
For her part mother Michelle used to run a nursery but sold the business and semi-retired to play poker full time.
3) Phil Hellmuth Torched for $32k by NBA Star David Lee
TMZ snagged an interview with the poker icon Phil Hellmuth this week and the Poker Brat dropped a few bombs about poker-playing athletes.
Turns out Hellmuth thinks Golden State Warrior David Lee is one of the best, forget Paul Pierce or Roberto Luongo.
Hellmuth even admitted Lee “smashed” a game he was in for $32k last week. Hellmuth went on to talk about a few other athletes who’ve found success playing poker.
