Daily 3-Bet: Laak Attack, Selbst Jack, Ivey Greatness
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a wind-whipped dune buggy ride across the afternoon poker news desert.
Any suggestions for a future 3-bet, feel free to drop a note in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find Phil Laak laying a beatdown on the Party Poker Big Game, Vanessa Selbst getting felted in Vienna and Daniel Negreanu musing on the cost of greatness.
1) Phil Laak Dominating Early On in Party Poker Big Game
Another 48-Hour Big Game is underway in Vienna and from the jump Phil Laak has had his way with the table.
Up over €20k already, Laak is surprisingly working over a very strong starting lineup that includes Eugene Katchalov, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Dan “Jungleman” Cates, Sam Trickett and Romanian Ignat “0human0” Liviu, one of the top online players in the world.
High Roller Trickett, fresh off another huge session in Macau, was down €20k early (losing with QQ to Laak's AA) but has got even again at the expense of Katchalov in a big pot with kings over nines.
Blinds are €25/€50 with a €100 straddle to start but expect an increase as the game goes on. Every four hours a player is voted off as well.
Expected to jump in the mix over the next 44 hours are Tony G, Erik Seidel, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Luke “Young Benyamine” Schwartz and Scott Seiver, among others.
Follow the live stream for the full two days on the PartyPoker blog with commentary currently from Mike Sexton and Jesse May. If you enjoy hearing 25c/50c haters complain about how bad the play/commentary is, check out the running 2+2 thread here.
2) Vanessa Selbst Breaking Bad in Vienna
Easily one of the top 10 tournament players in the world, things haven’t been going Vanessa Selbst’s way on her trip to Vienna.
Needing to finish first in her heat to make the Premier League V final earlier in the week, Selbst got all the way to heads-up with some dominant play before falling just short against Dan Cates.
Jumping into Day 1a of WPT Vienna yesterday, Selbst had another stretch of dominant play before an unfortunate series of events ended in a disappointing bust:
Shoved 31BB from BB vs button with AJ and got called by A7! So I'm out. Day 1B tomorrow.
Day 1b hasn’t worked out any better for her either:
Busted. Kid shows up to the table squeezes first hand tries to bluff next. His 3rd hand I get AQ v his 44 on AQ4ss, so gg obv.
Despite the demise of Selbst, plenty of big names are in the field on Day 1b at WPT Vienna with Andy Black, Steve O'Dwyer, Fabrice Soulier, Andy Frankenberger and McLean Karr running up big stackes.

3) Negreanu Gets Deep on the Cost of Greatness
The weekly Daniel Negreanu rant is out, as per usual, with a more light-hearted and positive vibe compared to the last few.
On the agenda this time: the kindness of the Irish, the competence of PokerStars, the success of the first iSeries Live event, some thoughts on the greatness of Phil Ivey and Stu Ungar and the standard degen story/pic montage finish.
Daniel being Daniel, he still manages to fit in a shot at Annie Duke and Jeffrey Pollack.
Any questions for Daniel, fire them off in his FCP thread here. Rant below:
