Commerce Casino releases 2008 LAPC schedule

Commerce Casino

Continuing the onslaught of poker tournaments at the beginning of the year, the Commerce Casino released the schedule for the 2008 L.A. Poker Classic on Thursday.

The 2007 version of the event drew in 13,400 participants that took part in the multitude of poker disciplines offered. The crown jewels of the LA Poker Classic, the $10,000 World Poker Tour championship event (won by previously unknown player Eric Hershler in a classic battle with professional J. C. Tran) and the WPT Invitational, will be a huge part of the festivities in 2008.

Once again the Commerce rolls out a 30-event schedule that will commence on Jan. 24. As in years past, players will also be competing for Best All-Around Player of the Tournament.

The top 16 finishers in 22 of the 30 events of the tournament will receive points, with the top five finishers earning a maximum of 50 points each. These points will be calculated throughout the schedule and the top five players will divide a $50,000 prize pool for the Best All-Around Player of the Tournament award.

The Commerce also brings back as a part of the LA Poker Classic schedule the highly popular No-Limit Tag Team event, taking place on Valentine's Day.

In the tournament, couples play as teammates who change out when the levels go up. Last year, the tournament drew many couples with the winning team splitting the top prize of $25,610.

The WPT will be the host of several events during the schedule at the Commerce. The new WPT Ladies series will continue there with a $1,000 No-Limit event, which should draw a highly competitive field.

The $10,000 WPT title event has traditionally attracted huge fields, with past champions including Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and Antonio Esfandiari.

The final event of the LA Poker Classic is traditionally the WPT Invitational, drawing professional poker players to the felt against celebrities from the film, television and music world. Past competitors at the WPT Invitational, which awards a seat to the WPT Championship at the Bellagio in April and a donation to a charitable cause, have included actors Vince Vaughn, James Woods, Ray Romano, Jason Alexander, Don Cheadle, Mimi Rogers, Jennifer Tilly, Lou Diamond Phillips, Norm MacDonald, Cheryl Hines, Shannon Elizabeth and Maura Tierney.

As one of the top casinos in Los Angeles, the Commerce Casino is ready for the onslaught of poker's elite to battle on the felt for some of the biggest prizes in tournament poker. For a full look at the schedule, visit
