Commerce Casino finishes poker renovations

After five months of conducting renovation work without breaking the concentration of the poker players in action in the environs, the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, Calif., has wrapped up the project.

That means the newly refurbished space will be ready in time for holiday tournaments and for the upcoming L.A. Poker Classic in February 2008.

The owners of the Commerce, recognized as the largest cardroom in the world with its 200-plus poker and table games, felt it was time to revitalize the appearance of the room.

"In additional to being more attractive and visually cohesive throughout the casino, we focused on creating more comfort and convenience for our customers," said Tim Gustin, casino manager at the Commerce.

The improvements are already noticeable and the work has made one of the best poker rooms in California an even better place to play the game.

The decor has been revitalized with fresh new paint in a palette of purple, cornflower blue and gold against a cream background. Plush new carpeting has been installed throughout the casino and extended play chairs, with comfortable backs and cushioned seats, are now in place at every table on both casino levels.

The Crowne Ballroom has traditionally been reserved for special events and high-profile tournament action such as the L.A. Poker Classic and other Commerce poker events, but now it has been converted into another permanent poker playing arena.

Along with the play area, the entire casino floor and former ballroom have been decked out with 60 Pioneer plasma televisions displayed on the casino walls, tuned to ESPN, Fox Sports, CNN and more.

"We believe that the plasma screens will be a big hit with our regulars and newcomers alike," Gustin said.

What used to be the concierge desk has been improved as well. The casino has enlarged and enhanced it. The new Casino Services Desk will continue to provide tournament registration, directions to regional attractions, dinner reservations and more, but it will also now be the central sign-up point for table play.

The Commerce will play host to the L.A. Poker Classic beginning on Jan. 24, but the considerable improvements can be seen now if you're lucky enough to be in the area and visit. It should make what was already one of the most popular stops on the World Poker Tour even more appealing and should improve the atmosphere for the regulars who call the Commerce home.
