Review
Mike Caro, also known as "the Mad Genius of Poker," published the first version of this book as early as 1983. Since then, many things have happened in poker but most tells haven't changed, and that makes this book a very unique and interesting read.
The Book of Tells is basically a guide to identifying and understanding the physical tells an opponent is prone to displaying at the poker table. As Mike himself puts it in "Caro's Great Law of Tells," players are either acting or they aren't. If they are acting, then decide what they want you to do and disappoint them. This is what this book is all about and, for the most part, it manages to describe how a player can accomplish this feat.
Every tell has a name and a number and is explained with the use of both text and pictures. The pictures are not always "telling" and are quite out of date which makes the book feel old. This should not discourage you though, as most of the tells are accurate and your ability to spot them will make you a more successful poker player.
If you are able to detect weakness in your opponents, you can win pots by betting or raising at the right moment and win where you might have otherwise folded. Similarly, you can better identify when your strong hand might be second best.
In total, it reads 320 pages.
