Burland Bags UKIPT Brighton
Londoner Jamie Burland won PokerStars UK and Ireland Poker Tour Brighton after beating a surprisingly tough final table this weekend.
A total of 259 players bought into the £1,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournament, which began last Thursday.
The tournament drew a number of notable British and Irish professional poker players including Neil Channing, Liam Flood, Jude Ainsworth and Julian Threw.
The final table included aggressive Czech player Tomas Cibak, John Spinks who nearly made a final table of a $1,500 WSOP event this summer and former CEO Poker Tour winner Jonathan Campbell.
Perhaps the biggest surprise at the final table was the appearance of Texan Bill Seber who has over $500,000 in poker tournament winnings across the U.S.
After a deep run Seber ended up busting in third place when his 7-8 failed against Cibak's A-9, which cleared the way for a heads-up battle between Burland and Cibak.
Burland had a high profile rail with both Channing and UKIPT runner-up Owen Robinson cheering him on.
It didn't take long to settle a winner as Burland made a big call with top-pair in one of the first hands to take a commanding chip lead.
In the final hand Burland got all-in with top-pair against Cibak's flush draw and the draw never hit.
Burland picked up £65,400 for coming in first place and a £5,000 seat into PokerStars EPT London, which is set to take place this fall. Cibak earned a £40,100 consolation prize for coming in second.
The regional UKIPT will now head to Edinburgh at the Corn Exchange for its next stop. The £550 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em tournament will take place Aug. 19-22 and will be capped at 500 players.
