Budding pro player wins HPT event
By Sarah Polson
The Heartland Poker Tour took its poker tables to Mount Pleasant, Mich., last weekend and saw more than three hundred players take on the No-Limit Texas Hold'em main event.
Besting them all was David Peters, a 21-year old from Toledo, Ohio, who had given up his college studies at Bowling Green University to play poker. He pockets $130,178 for the win.
This is Peters' biggest win so far, though he's racked up more than $450,000 in total winnings so far. He turned 21 just six months ago to be able to play more U.S. events.
"I was a student at Bowling Green, but quit college to pursue poker," Peters said. "My parents have been very supportive, and I think I made the right choice."
Peters has mainly played online poker, where he's seen quite a bit of success. However, he said he's managed to play about 20 live events and do well in that realm as well.
He has played on the poker circuit in the HPT as well as the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.
The final-table results for the HPT stop at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Michigan are as follows:
| Place | Name | Hometown | Prize |
| 1st | David Peters | Toledo, Ohio | $130,178 |
| 2nd | Bill Vendt | Jackson, Mich. | $65,089 |
| 3rd | Issa Yacoub | Buckeye, Ariz. | $39,053 |
| 4th | Ryan Pham | Hold, Mich. | $30,375 |
| 5th | Chad Rauschenberger | Bay City, Mich. | $26,036 |
| 6th | Bill Bostick | St. Clai, Mich. | $21,696 |
This might not have been Peters first go around with the HPT or other poker tournaments, but it was the first time the HPT has headed to the Soaring Eagle for its tournament series.
"We could not be happier with the turn out for our first time here," said an HPT founding partner. "It's a phenomenal property, and we're looking forward to coming back again in 2009.
Meanwhile the tour will be making its next stop in Minnesota. It heads to the Grand Casino Mille Lacs Sept. 15-21. It also has events scheduled for destinations in Colorado, Detroit, New York, Iowa and the Chicago area during this season.
