Bubblers get Milwaukee's Best consolation prize
Just short of the money is obviously one of the toughest spots to bow out of a poker tournament.
It's even more painful, of course, if that tournament is the World Series of Poker Main Event.
You miss a nice pay day for sure, but there's an extra little level of dissappointment to getting that far in the biggest game in the world and having to settle for nothing.
Also, everyone from your hometown gives you the gears about it for like, ever.
Milwaukee's Best Light feels your pain. And wants to offer the best remedy they can, announcing today it will host the World Series of Poker Main Event's second annual Bubble Playoff, a freeroll poker event for the final nine players eliminated just out of the money this year.
The consolation prize, for the best of the unlucky nine who finish in positions 622-630, missing out on at least the smallest payout of $20,320: a seat at the 2008 WSOP Main Event, valued at $10,000, and a year's supply of Milwaukee's Best Light beer.
"Last year, the bubble players really appreciated that Milwaukee's Best Light gave them a second chance, since they had played for such a long time in the Main Event and came away with nothing," said Kevin Rutherford, senior brand manager, Milwaukee's Best Light.
"We were pleased that we helped one of them leave Vegas with a seat to the 2007 Main Event."
That lucky winner was Hoa Nguyen, who had finished near the bubble in both the 2005 and 2006 Main Events.
"I was so disappointed to miss out on the money last year, after having played for four long days," Nguyen said.
"Then Milwaukee's Best Light invited me to the freeroll tournament for the chance to win a seat to the 2007 Main Event. I'm very grateful to have won the seat, particularly if I go deep this year."
Nguyen has put the seat to good use so far, making it to Day 2.
This year's Bubble Playoff is set to go Friday, July 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the Amazon Room.
