Bonkowski Booms, Negreanu Busts at EPT San Remo
Less than 24 hours after the 2011 WSOPE main event wrapped in Cannes, 359 players were back at it down the coast in San Remo, Italy today for Day 1a of the European Poker Tour San Remo main event.
As expected a slew of pros made the trip and bought in for the first of two Day 1s with 888 Poker pro Tyler Bonkowski finishing the day among the chip leaders with 124k in chips.
Leading the chip counts are Italians Gianluca Trebbi and Massimiliano Forti, each with about 159k in chips.
Also at the top is American pro Marco Traniello, who was lucky enough to flop quads with jacks on a J-T-J board and run into a flopped full house and an overpair.
Traniello used the good fortune to help build his stack up to 137,700 to end the day.
Also having a good day and bagging up chips for Day 2 were Kevin MacPhee (99k), Lex Veldhuis (74k), Jen Harman (71k), Mike Leah (50k), Shannon Shorr (49k) and reigning San Remo champ Rupert Elder (42.5k).
Not so lucky on the day – or quite lucky, depending on how he looked at it - was PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu, who busted out fairly early in the day when he got his J-9 in against Bonkowski’s queens.
Negreanu has been tweeting frequently about his two-month trip over in Europe and was anxious to get back home to Vegas, so he may have got his real wish.
Other notable names to play and bust out today were Jason Mercier, Maria Ho, John Racener, Arnaud Mattern, Victor Ramdin and Dan “djk123” Kelly.
Organisers expect upwards of 500 players to invest the 5,000 euro buy-in for Day 1B tomorrow.
Play begins at 2 pm from the Casino San Remo. Tune in for live coverage on the PokerStars blog.
