Bodog.com phases out U.S. gambling advertising

By Erin Warner

Bodog.com is pulling its American gaming-related advertising in the wake of recent U.S. anti-gambling legislation, but will continue to accept online players from the country.

The withdrawal includes television, radio, magazine and newspaper campaigns mostly for the company's free-play and educational site, Bodog.net. Instead, the online gaming business will focus its efforts on the emerging European and Asian markets.

In a release, Bodog.com founder Calvin Ayre said the recent passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act by the U.S. House of Congress caused the pullback.

"Though the online gaming environment in the U.S. seems to be headed down a path toward eventual regulation, the current climate calls for even more focus of our gaming-related advertising dollars into markets that face Europe and Asia," he said.

Bodog.com will, however, continue to advertise its other music, television and publishing ventures in the U.S.

The gaming and entertainment company has relocated in Antigua from its former headquarters in Costa Rica, after acquiring gambling company Betcorp last month.
