The final event before the big one is Event 53, the $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout. This two-day pokerfest kicks off at noon Tuesday in the Amazon Room and mixes the idiosyncrasies of Limit Hold'em tournaments with the peculiarities of the shootout format.
You wouldn't think that Limit Hold'em, with its deliberate, grinding play and marginal edges, would be well suited to the shootout concept, which requires a player to eliminate the other players at his/her table before moving on, but this tournament has proven a success in the past and returns as a popular component of the WSOP schedule.
Last year, the LHE Shootout was the penultimate event before the Main, tournament number 53 of 55 on the year. 720 players registered, meaning 72 tables in the first round, and every player who advanced to the second round of play earned a piece of the $982,800 prize pool.
The final table was a grueling affair, requiring the most successful of the final eight to battle until six in the morning, when Hendon Mobster Ram Vaswani defeated Andy Ward after turning the nut flush with K♥ Q♠ to conclude an absolutely dominant heads-up performance.
For the win, Vaswani booked $217,438 in prize money, as well as his first WSOP bracelet and an exclusive interview with PokerListings.com.
Besides the Shootout, Day 33 at the 2008 Dub-Sop will feature the final tables of Events 50 and 51, the $10,000 World Championship Pot-Limit Omaha and $1,500 baby H.O.R.S.E. tournaments, respectively. Check out the 2008 WSOP section and last night's recap blog for the full report on who's where at the final felts.
We'll also see Day 2 of the last $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em donkament, where those who survived the massacre that was Day 1 will attempt to make it to their own final table, with the bracelet set to be awarded on Wednesday.
That about sums up your Tuesday at the World Series. The Main Event starts on Thursday and from there on out there's no stopping the PL.com machine, so buy the ticket and take the ride while you can and remember: we don't stop because we can't stop. That's it.
Oh yeah: boost that bankroll a bit by playing in one of our exclusive freerolls. Don't be another victim.
