Layne Flack

In poker you have three options: check, bet, or fold. After millions of repetitions of these actions we find ourselves 22 days into the 2008 WSOP. The standard two bracelets were distributed, two tournaments started day two, but only one tournament started today.

The most exciting part of the day for the fans milling back and forth throughout the Amazon Room was hands down Layne Flacks return to the winner's podium. Layne 'Back to Back' Flack had been stuck in a WSOP Bracelet drought for the last five years. Today it rained all over Flack as he powered his way to victory over Dan Makowsky and seven others at the final table of the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em tournament.

It's a good thing that Layne won since he spent $33,000 on rebuys and add ons. He needed at least a twelfth place cash to break even on the tournament! Layne took home $577,725 (not including any of the rebuys or other incidentals) and his sixth WSOP bracelet of his career. Danny Makowsky had to settle for $355,050 for second, not a bad consolation prize.

Mike Rocco boxed his way to a bracelet today defeating Al Barbieri in $1,500 Seven Card Stud tournament. Al Barbieri started the heads-up match with a definitive chip lead when everything started to go downhill. It was impossible to tell that his entire tournament was unraveling before his very eyes because he remained relaxed with his foot up on the chair next to him.

Barbieri tried to keep the action under control hoping to outplay his opponent but none of the big pots seemed to be going his way. When Rocco took the chip lead he let Barbieri do most of the betting for him; an easy style to play when the cards are going your way. Rocco delivered the final blow and he immediately went into a spectacular celebration with whooping, hollering, laughing, and maybe a tear or two as well. Rocco will receive a check for $135,753 for the win.

Cody Slaubaugh went on a rampage late into the game in the most recent $1,500 Donkament. During the last three or four hours of play he went from $280,000 to end the day almost $1.6 million plus the chip lead. Up until that point Danny Wong was the story of the tournament. He moved around more chips than anybody else and it's a miracle he didn't sustain a poker related injury from all the bets he made and pots he stacked. A top poker athlete, he kept the lead for most of the day but will start tomorrow in third with just over a million. Jesper Hougaard is in second place with $1.35 million. The rest of the players that will be returning are Owen Crowe, Justin Wald, Rick Solis, Doug Middleton, John Shipley, Aaron Kanter. Final table at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Be there!

The second restart today was the $10,000 Omaha H/L Championship. The tournament started with 235 players and 120 of them made it to day 2. They played down to 18 players and Mike Matusow was sharing the chip lead with Ram Vaswani until nearly the end when Vaswani picked up a pot to take sole possession. Vaswani will come back with $450,000 to Matusow $390,000.

Mike Matusow
Damn Toto and his little glasses too!

Chau Giang, Greg Jamison, Tony Ma, Berry Johnston, Jason Gray, and David Benyamine are all still in. Max Pescatori, Bruno Fitoussi, Brad Booth, James Van Alstyne, and Erick Lindgren all squeaked into the money but couldn't get a good enough run going and all fizzled out. Mike Matusow was in a very chatty mood and perhaps he will put on quite a show tomorrow. They start at 3 p.m. so come back to see what 'The Mouth' will say next!

The only tournament to start today was a $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em tournament. 605 hopefuls turned out for this event and a scant 63 were bagging chips at the end. They quit playing as soon as the bubble burst. Michael Binger will have the fattest bag going into tomorrow. He's the chip leader with $148,000. Lee Watkinson, Ayaz Mahmood, and Neil Channing are a few of the others in the top five. They return tomorrow at 2 p.m. to play down nine.

There was a lot of action on all fronts today. Tomorrow is Day 23 and the continuation of the events mentioned as well as the start of yet another $1,500 Donkfest that will ensure that the room is full of thousands of people, a lot with no clue. Make sure you come back at noon sharp and don't be late because in these things if you blink you might miss it.
