Okay, that's an exaggeration. But it's not that far from the truth. The first Day 1 of the inaugural NAPC (the field of more than 500 entrants was too large for the Fallsview Casino's Grand Hall, so Day 1 has been split into Day 1a and Day 1b) was marked by extremely slow, extremely cautious play and some bouts of excitement that were somewhat odd for a $10,000 Main Event.
The day certainly started off looking reasonable enough. The first heat of 263 players took their tables at almost precisely noon, and with the tournament director's blessing, the cards went in the air and play began. The turnout was encouraging for this, the biggest Canadian event on the Freddy Deeb and Allen Cunningham, so the action should be fast and furious. Excitement or not, however, Day 1b will have to work pretty hard to eclipse 1a in terms of sheer peculiarity.
