The PokerListings.com team was able to mix business with pleasure last night when we attended a promotional party in the Full Tilt Poker suite. Our own reporter, Arthur Crowson, was able to get his hands on four tickets to this gathering which was thrown in honor of Clonie Gowen's new spread in Maxim Magazine. In attendance was Team Full Tilt as well as comedian Norm Macdonald.
The real fun didn't start however until the group moved upstairs to the VIP section on the patio of the Voodoo lounge. With a nearly 360 degree view of Las Vegas it was a perfect place to spend July 4th. The drinks were flowing freely and so was the conversation as players unwound after a long day at the poker tables.
All the big names who have made Team John D'Agostino and Mike Matusow to name a few.
One of the most interesting characters at the party though was actor and comedian Norm Macdonald.
I had a chance to talk to Norm the day before in the media room at the Rio Casino and he filled me in on his plans here at the WSOP
. He's going to play in all the No-Limit Hold'em events. He told me he has been playing poker for more than twenty years and originally became interested in the game because he was doing a lot of gambling in Atlantic City and discovered he lost less at the poker tables than in the pit.
Norm is currently working on a new project which will include actor and comedian Will Ferrell. It should be released within the next two years.
Another discovery I made last night is Norm's astounding skill at Rock Paper Scissors. I officiated a pair of matches between the comedian and two of poker's sharpest players. For $500 a throw, first to five points, Macdonald destroyed Mike Matusow 5 points to 1, racking up a $2,000 win. Clonie Gowen faired a little better but was unable to claim victory against Macdonald, the Rock Paper Scissors master.
It was a great time but the alarm clock woke me up in what seemed like minutes after I had fallen asleep. I paid dearly this morning for the fun we had last night, but after all, like the title says: it's a tough job but somebody's got to do it.
