Strategy Snapshot: Flipping a Coin for $500k

Published by: Daniel Skolovy

Posted In: The Poker Reporter Blog, Strategy Snapshots

Tom Dwan This edition of the snapshot features draws aplenty and a rare three-way all-in culminating in a $490k pot won by Urindanger.

The action was nonstop this weekend at both the "Rail" and "Gus" Heaven tables. With $300k plus pots being thrown around like stress balls in the PokerListings office it didn't take long for the "biggest pot of the month" honors to fall.

Players:

Tom "durrrr" Dwan: $421,852

Isaac "luvtheWNBA" Haxton: $148,240

Gus Hansen: $68,197

elmariachimacho: $94,294

Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond: $366,592

Di "Urindanger" Dang: $195,482

Game: $500/$1,000, No-Limit Hold'em, "Gus Heaven," Full Tilt Poker

The Setup

elmariachimacho starts the hand out by raising to $3,500 from early position. Urindanger makes the call on the button, and durrrr three-bets to $15,000 from the small blind.

Both elmariachimacho and Urindanger call the reraise, and they are three-way to a Kc 7s Tc flop.

durrrr continuation bets out $19,200 and elmariachimacho calls. Urindanger tanks before raising to $102,000.

durrrr now reraises all-in for $387,652. elmariachimacho calls off his small stack and Urindanger calls off the rest of his stack.

When the dust settles, there is a $202,376 main pot and a $283,879 side pot. durrrr shows the Kd Jd for top pair, jack kicker, and his two opponents are both on draws.

Urindanger has 8c 9c for the robust combo draw of an open-ender and a flush draw; elmariachimacho has Qs Js for just an open-ender.

durrrr just can't run fast enough to dodge the Qc that falls on the turn, giving Urindanger a flush. The pointless river peels off the 7c and Urindanger's flush is good enough for both pots.

Chips ahoy!

The Breakdown

elmariachimacho opens the action with a raise to $3,500 with his Qs Js. Big suited connectors are great hands in short-handed No-Limit, and are worthy of a raise even from early position.

Urindanger makes the call on the button with 8c 9c. Urindanger will be in position for the rest of hand and makes an easy call with his suited connectors.

durrrr, always the aggressor, elects to three-bet to $15,000 from the small blind. He knows the playing tendencies of his opponents, and knows elmariachimacho can raise a wide range even from early position. He also knows Urindanger can call with an extremely wide range on the button.

His raise is good because a lot of the time it will fold out Urindanger and leave him heads-up with the weaker elmariachimacho.

elmariachimacho makes the call with his Qs Js and Urindanger, never one to say no to pot odds, calls as well with his 8c 9c.

When the flop comes Kc 7s Tc durrrr bets out $19,200 with his top pair. Even though the pot is three-way, durrrr's pair of kings are usually best in this spot, and as such makes a good value bet.

elmariachimacho makes the call with his open-ender. With the pot being three-way it is already huge, and elmariachimacho isn't about to give up just yet.

Urindanger hits the flop extremely hard as well. With an open-ender as well as a flush draw, his combo draw is a slight favorite to win this pot by showdown, even if he is up against pocket aces.

To capitalize on the equity he has in the pot, he puts in a large raise to $102,000.

durrrr, with top pair, knows Urindanger could be making this move with any number of draws. He also knows that if he calls this raise he is pot-comitted, so he elects to get it all-in now.

Not not elmariachimacho.

elmariachimacho makes the call. With Urindanger's raise and durrrr's shove, there is way too much money in the pot to fold now.

Urindanger snap-calls. After putting in half his stack, he is never going to fold, so he easily calls the rest off with his huge draw.

He doesn't have to wait long - the Qc instantly falls on the turn, leaving his opponents drawing dead.

The meaningless 7c falls on the river and Urindanger is shipped both pots, totaling $487,255.

Don't feel too bad for durrrr; he had a massive weekend coolering people left, right and center. Urindanger was lucky enough to win the flip this time around and poor elmariachimacho gets to add another -$94,294 to his yearly totals.
