It all comes down to this for legendary "Prince of Poker" and former WSOP champ, Scotty Nguyen.
By now you've all seen or heard the story. On March 23rd, 2009, Scotty Nguyen got a bit heavy into the Michelobs, stared directly into the PokerListings.com cameras and made perhaps his most grandiose claim ever.
Either he wins $4 million at the 2009 WSOP, or he quits poker.
Re-visit the special moment here:
Is that going to happen? Of course not. Scotty Nguyen isn't going to quit poker.
Scotty Nguyen is also not going to win $4 million. Unless something really, really miraculous happens.
As of today, Nguyen has won a total of $33,668 from his lone WSOP cash this year in event 37, the $10,000 Stud Hi/Lo Championship.
With just the Main Event to go, he's got his work cut out for him to hit four bills. Assuming this year's Main Event brings in as many players as last year (and that's far from a given), that would mean he has to finish 3rd or better to make good on his bet.
Best of luck to him. Even with the notoriously soft fields at the ME, Nguyen is going to have bring his "A" game and run gooder than Prefontaine.
Either way, Nguyen's got his last chips in play for the 2009 WSOP today on Day 1c of the Main Event. Tune it to the live tournament section to see if he can catch a miracle.
If he does though? Put that. Definitely put that.
