And for all but one rounder that's how every WSOP ends - busting out of the Main Event. Occasionally in less-than-glorious fashion.
The best thing about poker, however, is that hope always springs eternal for the next shot at the big prize.
Good news on two fronts then this year: The WSOP schedule has been pushed up a full two weeks - now starting May 30 - meaning two weeks less to ruminate over the ignominious beat that ended title run 2007.
Meaning, for two, it's already time to start thinking about qualifying for WSOP 2008 and the earlier the satellite the better.
With that in mind, PokerListings leads the early charge this year with $255,000 in exclusive freerolls for 2008 WSOP prize packages already on the calendar.
1) At Full Tilt Poker, $180k is already booked for PokerListings players (signed up at Full Tilt through a PokerListings.com link) in the form of twelve $15k satellites between Feb. 24 and June 22; bi-weekly from now until May 18, then weekly after that.
Just 300 Full Tilt points over a two-week period to qualify for each; full schedule and details can be found here.
Winning packages are $12,500, including Main Event buy-in, travel and accommodation; $2,500 in cash is also spread to a deep prize pool in each freeroll.
First qualifying dates are Feb. 6-Feb. 20, with the first satellite Feb. 24.
2) Another $75k in exclusive WSOP freerolls is also now on the table for PokerListings players at Pacific Poker.
Five $15k events are scheduled between now and June, with 50 comp points to qualify for each. First event goes Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. (GMT), with the qualifying period Jan. 17 - Feb. 17.
Same deal as at Full Tilt, with the winning package $12.5k and an extra $2,500 in cash spread to a deep prize pool.
