We won't know the final number until registration closes on Day 1b but by all accounts we've surpassed expectations in terms of turnout.
Since this event won't be televised, we didn't see the usual contingent of sponsored name-brand pros. Nevertheless, there were a few big names to be found and plenty of locals looking to keep the title here on Hungarian soil.
This event officially got started last night as the dedicated media corps and a few top players hit the Budapest night. Nursing hangovers dulled by strong coffee and unseasonably warm weather, the PokerListings crew made it to the Las Vegas Casino this morning with plenty of time to spare.
We had our eyes on a few players, and in the end our predictions turned out to be right on the money. The French team representing Winamax is always a smart bet and today it was Arnaud Mattern leading the charge.
Just take a look through our live updates and you'll see how much attention Mattern got. Right from the get-go he was extremely active, employing a combination of running good and playing well to take an early chip lead. It was exactly this style that earned him his first major title last year at EPT Prague.
Our other picks for the day were Sorel "Imper1um" Mizzi and Annette Obrestad. Not exactly risky choices given their track record, these two are always worth keeping an eye on. They like to play fast and they like to get involved - perfect when it comes to tournament reporting. Perhaps not surprisingly, both found themselves at the top of the counts when play was suspended.
Obrestad is our Day 1a chip leader with just over $100,000. Mattern is second and Mizzi is right behind him in third.
Here are the top 10 counts going into Day 1b.
Alongside the disciplined professionals peppered around the room was a healthy assembly of enthusiastic local amateurs. For the most part it seemed these players were hoping to either get lucky or go out in a blaze of glory.
Poker is exploding in Hungary and if this event is any indication we can expect great things in the future. Day 1b is slated to kick off tomorrow when the second half of the field will sit down and resume combat on the felty battlefield.
