BetonSports reaches settlement in civil lawsuit

By: Erin Warner

BetonSports, Plc. is permanently banned from accepting online bets from U.S. players, after the company reached a settlement in a civil litigation suit with a U.S. attorney. The U.K. company has been embroiled in the civil case brought forward by Catherine Hanaway since this summer.

In settling, BetonSports, Plc. agreed to advertise in a major newspaper that gambling online is illegal in the U.S. and that the company will no longer accept bets from the country. BetonSports, Plc. also agreed to open a toll-free phone number to inform U.S. customers that they can reclaim their wagers pending before the suit was filed.

In a statement, the company said it did not admit to wrongdoing by agreeing to the settlement.

BetonSports, Plc. is currently facing a 22-count indictment for allowing customers to place bets online and over the phone.

The company ceased U.S. operations in August after CEO David Carruthers was arrested on charges of racketeering and fraud.
