BetonSports chief still in jail after hearing postponed

By Sarah Polson

David Carruthers, BetonSports chief executive, will remain in custody in the U.S. after his lawyer asked a Fort Worth, Texas, court to postpone a bail hearing that was supposed to take place today.

Carruthers, who was arrested Monday at a Dallas airport while traveling to BetonSports' offices in Costa Rica, will now have his bail hearing moved from Texas to a federal district court in St. Louis, Mo. No date has been set for the appearance.

He and 10 others involved with BetonSports and three Florida companies that handle promotional activity for BetonSports were charged with conspiracy, racketeering and fraud in the U.S. in connection with taking sports bets over the Internet from U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Department of Justice is planning to oppose bail for Carruthers because they consider him a flight risk as a foreign national. They want him to remain in custody until his trial, which could be months away.
