Benger, Pons Turn 888poker WSOP Qualifiers into Nov. 9, $1m+
The WSOP November Nine has been found once again and two of the remaining players made it there without paying the $10,000 buy-in out of pocket.
Fernando Pons from Spain and Griffin Benger from Canada have turned 888poker satellites - one for €30 and one for $1,060 - into seats at the table for the November Nine.
They're also still in contention for the $8,000,000 first-place prize and the most coveted title in all of poker.
$1,000,000 Secured on €30
For reaching the final nine Pons and Benger have both already secured at least a $1m payout with $25m still to be distributed among the top 9.
First this year is $8,000,000 and second will take $4,658,452.
Both players qualified online on 888poker for much less than the $10,000 buy-in.
Benger registered for one of the direct satellites and spent $1,060 to win a $13,500 main event prize package.
Pons went even lower.
He started in a Step 5 satellite on 888poker, the €30 buy-in events that run every two hours, qualified for the direct qualifier and took it from there.
Opposite Poker Trajectories, Same Destination
Benger and Pons are as diverse poker players as is imaginable. Benger is one of the most successful online poker players ever – just check the results of “Flush_Entity."
At one time the #1 ranked online player in the world Benger has over $5.5m in online earnings.
He also has over $2m in live winnings and made the top 100 of the main event just two years ago.
Before poker Benger was a feared opponent known as ShaGuar playing the video game “Counter Strike” and won a world championship with team NoA.
Recently he was one of the two commentators of the first season of the Global Poker League alongside Sam Grafton.
In short, Benger is the kind of professional poker player you’d expect to reach the final table of a tournament with almost 7,000 players.
"An Example for Working Parents"
While Benger is a former top 20 player on the Global Poker Index, Pons isn’t even listed. It’s his first trip to Vegas, his first Main Event, and also the only event he played.
More than any other November Niner, Pons was overwhelmed.
“I don’t know what to say, I have no words," said Pons, who carried on to say how proud he was for setting “an example for working parents and fathers."
Once again, the great equalizer poker shows that anyone can win and make their dream come true. Check out our short bios of all the November Nine here.
