Everest Poker 4 Charity raised €5,000 for several charities earlier this month at the Grand Casino Brussels in Belgium. The winners of the tournament had €1,000 donated to the charity of their choice, the Veeweyde Animal Asylum, the largest animal shelter in Belgium.
The players participating in the tournament had formed teams and played in 10 No-Limit Texas Hold'em events throughout the day. Players earned points by staying in the games as long as possible and the winners of each tournament participated in a final table to determine the winner of the Everest Poker 4 Charity Champion title.
A player who goes by the name Stino was crowned the champion of the event. The top female player was Qiewie, who finished third after knocking out professional poker player Marc Naalden.
The teams were awarded a prize for their charity based on their team's achievements in the tournament.
Other charities that benefited from the tournament include Downsyndrom Vlaaderen; Pallieatieve zorg AZ Sint Lucas, a hospital offering comfort and tranquility for its patients; Similies, a support organization for families and friends of psychiatric patients; Een hart voor Limburg, a group working to improve the quality of life in Limburg; Poverello Kortzrijk, a social, medical, and psychological mediation service; Sensoa, an HIV clinic; and Moeders voor Moeders, which assists parents in crisis situation and acts as an intermediary between parents and schools, police, and social institutions.
The tournament also brought some controversy to Belgium where poker is considered illegal. The Belgian Federal Gaming Commission allowed the tournament because sponsored paid the €5,000 for the charities rather than the players.
