Bay 101 Shooting Star takes flight

Poker players are settling in to see who can get their money's worth from the Bay 101 Shooting Star in San Jose this week. Play at the World Poker Tour event is underway today and will run until a champion emerges from the pack on March 16.

Day 1 of the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em main event started at 11:15 a.m., with 250 players competing.

Plenty of pros have turned out for the event, including big names such as Freddy Deeb, Billy Baxter, Kido Pham, Vanessa Rousso and Daniel Negreanu.

Negreanu blogged about his love for the annual tournament - and his San Jose hotel room - in a recent post on his myspace account titled "Bay 101 is the Bomb."

"The concept for the tournament is unique and has its plusses and minuses, but I think the plusses far outweigh the minuses," he writes. "As a Shooting Star you have a bounty on your head which gives your opponents extra incentive to bust you, but there are ways to exploit that."

The biggest plus, Negreanu noted, is that he won't be put at a table with any other well-known pro.

But only time will tell how deep Kid Poker and his counterparts will go in the five-day event.
