The Gold Coast leg of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour started off on a record-setting pace Wednesday.

During the tour's first season, Conrad Jupiters Casino Gold Coast partnered with the Conrad Treasury Casino Brisbane 80 kilometres up the road, to jointly host ANZPT Queensland.

A total of 249 players made the event a huge success.

However, this season, Jupiters opened a 16-table poker room and decided to go it alone as host.

By all accounts, the move was a solid one.

Wednesday's first Day 1 flight of the AUD$2,500 main event saw 137 players hit the felt and Thursday's second is a virtual sellout with 146 of the150 seats already wrapped up.

In other words, a new player and prizepool record will be set for Queensland this week.

2009 Aussie Millions champ Stewart Scott, defending ANZPT Queensland champion Scott Kerr and New Zealand's first World Series of Poker bracelet winner Simon Watt all played Wednesday in a decidedly International field, including players from Australia, Argentina, Netherlands, Japan, New Caledonia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, USA, Brazil and Norway

After 8 levels of play PokerStars Qualifier Shivan Abdine grabbed the chip lead with Kerr not far off the pace.

Team PokerStars Pro Australia Tony Hachem, Bill Argyros, ANZPT Canberra Champion Jason Gray and 2010 Aussie Millions Champion Tyron Krost are all expected for the second Day 1 flight Thursday.
