Antigua toughens up online gambling regulations

By: Erin Warner

Antigua and Barbuda is tightening its grip on Internet gambling companies licensed in the country following a review and subsequent overhaul of its gaming regulations.

The Division of Gaming in the Financial Services Regulatory Commission is following the new parameters in an effort to show the international community the country is serious about meeting global industry standards and laws for Internet gambling.

Antigua and Barbuda recently received a World Trade Organization ruling in its favor in the country's ongoing dispute with the U.S. over online gambling legislation. But plans for the review started back in February when the gaming division announced its intention to rework current regulations.

The result is what the country's director of gaming calls a balanced effort that takes national best practices and commercial realities of online gaming operators into consideration.

The country's finance and economy minister signed off on the amended regulations Friday.

Antigua and Barbuda committed to upholding ethical and responsible gaming principles at the conclusion of the International Gaming Summit in England in October.
