Another player heads to WSOP courtesy of Full Tilt
Many players are already in Las Vegas working toward making their poker dreams come true at the World Series of Poker, but there are plenty more players who haven't hit Sin City yet. Among those is one of PokerListings' players who qualified for the Main Event at Full Tilt Poker.
All it takes to qualify is to have signed up at the poker site through a PokerListings.com link and then earn 300 player points during the week before the freeroll.
GaTim did just that recently and ended up earning a seat in the 2008 WSOP in the May 4 freeroll. The 48-year-old from Tallahassee, Fla., got his start playing online poker after seeing Chris Moneymaker win the WSOP Main Event in 2003.
He said he usually plays sit-and-goes and is on Full Tilt Poker almost every day.
"I like Full Tilt," GaTim said. "The software is good and pretty user friendly. We all complain about the bad beats, but I've seen some pretty nasty beats live also."
He didn't have to worry too much about bad beats during the Full Tilt Poker freeroll.
"The field was pretty solid for a freeroll," GaTim said. "I think the grand prize made everyone really take the event seriously. I was a little shocked at the size of the tourney - only 101 entrants with almost half getting paid."
GaTim described a key hand midway through the freeroll that helped him get to his win. He had pocket kings and had made a standard raise on the hand.
"The player to my left pushed all-in, and I called," GaTim said. "Well, you know what he had - AA. I'm thinking, 'What a cooler.' I spiked a king on the turn to win the hand. It was pretty clear sailing to the final table after that double-up."
On the winning hand, GaTim was sitting in the small blind and limped in when he saw he had pocket jacks.
"My opponent was fairly short-stacked, and I was hoping he would push," GaTim said. "He did. I called, and the jacks held up."
The final-table results of the May 4 freeroll were:
GaTim also takes his game live about two or three times a month, playing at a nearby dog track, the Jefferson County Kennel Club. That practice will come in handy if he opts to use his prize package to actually participate in the 2008 Main Event.
For players interested in winning a WSOP prize package as well, there are still three more freerolls to take part in at Full Tilt Poker, with the final two offering up two packages each.
For more information and to start building up player points to get into the freerolls, head to full tilt.
