Review

Barry Greenstein, also known as "The Robin Hood of Poker," has put together a strong book on poker and life. This is a different book in the sense that it is more of a guide on how to manage and understand life as a professional poker player than it is a book on in-depth poker strategy.

While it might not make you a better player in terms of technical skill, it will provide you with a greater understanding of issues that might be just as important, or perhaps even more important, such as mental strength and a better psychological understanding of both yourself and poker.

It is a highly entertaining read with many lush and colorful pictures, some of which were taken in places like the high stakes room at the Bellagio where normally no photographers are allowed.

It consists of four unique parts:

  1. The Poker World (48 pages), mainly documents Greenstein's life as a poker player;
  2. Philosophy (90 pages), lays out advice on how to manage your life as a poker player;
  3. Advanced Play (142 pages), covers game theory, discussions on math and analysis of actual poker hands;
  4. Addenda (30 pages), contains a great table for a better understanding of probabilities, odds and outs.

Some distinguishing chapters are "How to Behave in the Poker Society," "Traits of Winning Poker Players," "Poker and Your Sexuality," and "Money Management."

The end of section three consists of 60 pages of in-depth No-Limit Hold'em tournament hand analysis. This section alone could make up for the price of the book, though one might wish for a bit more in this department in general.

In total, it reads 316 pages.
