888 seeks reassurance from U.S. DOJ

Guarding the Cash Prize

By Erin Warner

Hot on the heels of PartyGaming, Plc., 888 Holdings announced its also doing damage control by engaging the U.S. Department of Justice in hopes of avoiding potential prosecution for illegal gambling.

The online casino operator and Pacific Poker owner was one of the companies most affected by the passage of the U.S. Internet gambling ban last year.

Though the company pulled its operations out of the U.S., it did accept players and take bets from Americans before the law cam into effect.

Firms associated with the online gambling industry in the U.S. have faced legal trouble of late, with the arrests of BetOnSports executives, Sportingbet's chairman and e-wallet NETeller's founders on online gambling-related charges.

The threat of possible criminal charges was enough to scare off British bookmaker Ladbrokes, which was in talks to buy 888.com in the spring, reports Reuters news service.

Currently, 888 says, it is too early to tell what the outcome of the discussions will be.
